You’ll always be my captain: Kohli to Dhoni

Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli, who had been groomed for the top job for several years by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, paid him the ultimate tribute as Dhoni retired from international cricket. “I’ve always said this and I will say it again, you will always be my captain!” Kohli said.

Kohli and Dhoni have shared excellent rapport over the last few years, and Kohli has stood by his former captain even as calls for the sacking of Dhoni became louder over the last two years.

In a video tribute posted online, Kohli said Dhoni’s retirement had left him short of words. “Words fall short a lot of times in life and I think this is one of those moments. All I can say is that you will always be that guy who sat in the last seat of the bus (sic),” Kohli said. “We have shared a great camaraderie, friendship, understanding because we have always played for the same roles, same goals, which was to make the team win.”

“It’s been a pleasure playing under you, alongside you. You showed belief in me, which I would always be grateful for,” he added.

Dhoni had announced his retirement on Saturday with a somewhat cryptic post on Instagram.
