Sale of premium bikes accelerates in North India

The Covid pandemic has hit almost all businesses and the sale of premium bikes was no exception. However, it has started picking up in the region in the past three months and some players have even achieved the last year’s levels in August. The size of the premium bike segment (priced above Rs 3 lakh) is around 20,000 units per annum.

The northern region, comprising Delhi, UP, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, HP and J&K, contributes 25-30% to total sales in the country. Almost all brands such as Triumph, Benelli and Harley-Davidson have their presence in the region.

Shoeb Farooq, business head, Triumph Motorcycles India, said, “Premium motorcycle industry has started recovering in the past three months. As a brand, we have reached the previous year’s levels and are doing relatively better than the industry. Slowly, the availability of BS-VI models is also improving and we represent a range of 12 models, which is the highest in the country.”

For Triumph, the northern region contributes 20% while the southern and western regions share the rest of the market share.

Vikas Jhabakh, MD, Benelli India, said, “The northern region contributes 25-30% to our sales. It is a strong market because the topography is suitable for riding. Punjab and Uttar Pradesh is a crucial market and it has a huge potential.” “Considering the demand, we plan to increase our presence by opening new dealerships in near future,” he said.
