Hathras: PIL seeks FIR under SC Act

A fresh PIL in the Supreme Court has demanded registration of criminal cases under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against erring police and other government officials in connection with the alleged destruction of evidence in the Hathras rape case in UP.

Filed by activist Chetan Janardhan Kamble, the PIL accused UP officials of “shielding the accused” and demanded strict action against erring officials to ensure that people’s faith in the rule of law was not dissipated.

A Kerala NGO has also filed an intervention application in the SC, alleging that a false narrative was being spread by the media against members of upper castes.

Munnokka Samudaya Samrakshana Munnani (Forward Community Welfare Front) said it was aggrieved by the publication of “purely speculative theories” by print, electronic, digital and social media that the Hathras case was the result of caste rivalry.

Meanwhile, the UP Government has filed an affidavit in the SC asserting that a three-fold protection mechanism has been put in place for security of victim’s family and witnesses.
